Their are in general three types of fire fighters. Those are career, retained, volunteer. Career fire fighter's are those who get paid and this is there day to day job. Retained fire fighters are sort of part time people. They are expected to be on call and available if necessary. Some times they also do shifts for which they are paid but this is not their many job or source of income. Then their are volunteer fire fighters. They are the same as the Career or Retained personal but they do not get paid. All fire fighters are equally qualified but some are paid and some are not and these is for a huge variety of reasons.
